Nurses, Nursing Education, and Nursing Workforce: Definitions


F. EMPLOYMENT TERMINOLOGY

  1. Employed in Nursing. An RN or LPN/VN who receives compensation for direct care or other work that requires licensure and/or educational preparation as a nurse.

  2. Employed Outside Nursing. An RN or LPN/VN who receives compensation for work that does not require licensure and/or educational preparation as a nurse.

  3. Unemployed. An RN or LPN/VN who does not receive compensation for work. This includes individuals who are (a) seeking employment that requires licensure and/or educational preparation as a nurse, or (b) seeking employment that does not require licensure and/or educational preparation as a nurse.

  4. Part-time Employee in Nursing. An RN and/or LPN/VN employed in nursing and works less than full time or less than a full work year, as defined by the employer.

  5. Full-time Employee in Nursing. An RN or LPN/VN employed in nursing for a full work week and a full work year as defined by the employer.

  6. Full-time Equivalent. A full time employee, or a combination of part time employees whose combined hours are the equivalent of a full-time position, as defined by the employer.

  7. Employee Benefits. Non-wage compensation provided to employees, such as group insurance, retirement benefits, day care, tuition reimbursement, and specialized benefits.
